Advent Resources

Good Afternoon All!

Before you know it the Christmas season will be upon us. It’s a very busy time with lots of traditions and different events going on; it’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of it all. One thing this season does offer is a great time to do special family devotionals. We often have a hard time being consistent with family devotion time in our house, but something about Advent makes it easier. If family worship is something you have had a hard time getting started, this may be the perfect time to try something. Who knows, it could just carry over into the new year.

Here are a few resources and ideas that could help:

Weekly candle lighting: We did this during our Sunday services last year and will be doing it again this year. It’s also a great thing to do at home with your kids. Myriads of resources are out there with what scriptures to read and what the candles are about.

One alternative to the wreath is to represent the ideas with a nativity scene. The first candle is hope and can be connected to the star and the skies proclaiming the hope of the world. The second candle is faith and can be shown by the faith Joseph and Mary had in the promises told them. The third candle is joy and can be shown by the shepherds' joy in the coming King. The fourth candle is peace and can be shown by the Angels’ message of peace.

Weekly/Nightly Devotional Readings: These are things that can be done at the dinner table (it doesn’t have to be every night).

Prepare Him Room (This is what we are doing this year)

Jesus Storybook Bible – They have put together a reading plan specifically for Advent

Advent Block Set – These are a cool set Jamie recommended with devotions and it’s a fun physical thing to do.

Advent Calendar with scripture or devotion: I grew up with an advent calendar that had Christmas tree decorations. Doing it with Scripture is a fun way to remember what the season is about. Here is one that is already put together for you.
